“Musical sound waves circulate through space. From which is derived that seductive, yet also elusive, unstable, phenomenon, known as music.”

WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 21 Thus wrote Vladimir Jankélévitch in his essay La Présence lointaine (Distant Presence), exploring the mobility of musical sound through a comparative reflection on the works of Isaac Albéniz, Déodat de Séverac, and Federico Mompou. For these three composers shared the art of expressing the ineffable and transfiguring reality through the use of distinctive harmonies, colours, and resonances. They succeeded in conjuring up landscapes of profound poetry, from which Wilhem Latchoumia has drawn inspiration to imagine a fascinating and deeply moving voyage between France and Spain.

22 CATALUÑA LLIVIA... DISTANT PRESENCE After Alberto Ginastera’s Argentina, Heitor Villa-Lobos’ Brazil and Manuel de Falla’s Spain, you are transporting us to the Pyrenees, and to other lands bathed in light. Where does this fascination with this sun-drenched repertoire come from ? Wilhem Latchoumia: I adore colourful music! Having French Caribbean roots, I am naturally more sensitive to anything sunlit and radiant. But the inspiration behind my various albums is above all anchored in the notion of folklore. All my programmes are structured around composers who have appropriated a popular heritage and magnified it through their own musical language. Heitor Villa-Lobos drew on the choro tradition as well as on African music, which is also part of Brazil’s cultural heritage; Manuel de Falla organised flamenco competitions… Their approaches are akin to those of a Béla Bartók or a Richard Wagner, to whom I have also devoted a recording, even if, in the latter’s case, the references belong more to the realm of mythology and cosmogony. It is fascinating to see the extent to which these great creators were able to draw on their roots in order to reinvent them. The same is true of Federico Mompou, Déodat de Séverac and Isaac Albéniz, whom I have chosen to draw closer together here.

Another distinctive feature of your programmes could be the element of storytelling, given how much they resemble narratives. Do you have the soul of a storyteller? In any case, it is a thought process that has remained with me ever since I left the conservatoire and embarked upon a career as a concert performer. How should a programme be structured? Should you keep to one particular realm, respect chronology, or create stylistic contrasts? I found my answer in the etymology of the word recital, which points back to the idea of a récit, a narrative, a storytelling dimension. I therefore seek to connect the works through a guiding thread, without necessarily having a concrete story to tell. And although today’s obsession, with downloading, leans towards a fragmented way of listening to albums, I still conceive them with the idea that they will also be appreciated as a continuous whole. I like to imagine a listener taking their time to savour them, seated in an armchair with a glass of cognac, or a fine vintage rum in hand WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 23

24 CATALUÑA LLIVIA... DISTANT PRESENCE What made you decide to bring together the three composers featured in this programme? It was Françoise Thinat* who first pointed me towards the work of Déodat de Séverac. I explored some of his cycles and was captivated by a piece evoking the prayer of mule drivers before the Christ of Llivia. This town in the Cerdanya (Cerdaña) became the starting point for my album, conceived as a journey through the Pyrenees. The geographical links with Mompou, whose music celebrates Catalonia, quickly became apparent to me. With Albéniz, the connection was more one of inheritance, since Séverac was his pupil at the Schola Cantorum and completed Navarra, which his teacher had left unfinished at his death. Bringing together this trio of composers was initially intuitive, but when I searched for their names online, I discovered that Vladimir Jankélévitch had already grouped them together in his essay La présence lointaine (Distant Presence). He discusses their sound worlds and their styles of writing, notably their use of added sixths, which give such a distinctive colour to their harmonies. Reading this essay confirmed the relevance of my programme. * Founder of the Orléans International Piano Competition and the Galaxie Y Foundation.

WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 25 And why did you choose to intertwine their worlds? My initial idea was to evoke a journey through French and Spanish Catalonia. Each piece in Déodat de Séverac’s cycle refers to a town in the Pyrenees, and rather than visiting them all in one go, I was keen to move back and forth between them, also immersing myself in the places depicted by Federico Mompou. I therefore chose to cross the border with each piece, constantly changing surroundings, atmosphere and language. The programme took shape gradually, guided by my wanderlust.

26 CATALUÑA LLIVIA... DISTANT PRESENCE These composers share a very strong attachment to their local environment. Debussy even spoke of the ‘perfume’ of Déodat de Séverac’s music. How is this reflected in their compositions? Everything can be found in the reference to folklore that each composer draws upon and absorbs into his own language. In Mompou’s case, it can belong to the realm of imaginary, insofar as some of the Canción y Danza are based on original themes. Yet he also draws on Catalan heritage, as in the final piece of the cycle, which takes its inspiration from a traditional nursery rhyme. Déodat de Séverac, by contrast, leans more towards invention, managing to distance himself from popular sources by deploying his own poetic imagination. As for Albéniz, his music is steeped in folk themes which are often swept up in a flurry of notes. And if these compositions strike us as so authentic, it is also because they allow us to hear the sounds of life itself. Mompou, like Séverac, who had turned away from Paris and its social bustle, succeeded in capturing moments of everyday life. They speak here of country folk, evoke simple gestures such as children’s games, memories of village festivities, and nature's fragrances.

WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 27 And what about the spirituality of these pieces, some of which possess an almost religious profundity? Through its asceticism, Mompou’s music invites us into a kind of contemplation. Towards the end of his life, the composer went even further, in the exploration of the very notion of silence in his cycle Música callada, inspired by a canticle of Saint John of the Cross. This relationship to the sacred is also expressed through the presence of bells. Déodat de Séverac evokes those of the church of Llivia, which punctuate the mule drivers’ prayers in a piece often regarded as the spiritual apex of his work. It is also worth recalling that Federico Mompou grew up in the bell foundry founded by his grandfather, and was thus nurtured throughout his childhood by the resonances of vibrating metal; hence his remarkable ability to recreate them at the piano.

28 CATALUÑA LLIVIA... DISTANT PRESENCE Bells, children’s shouting, the sounds of nature… So there is a multitude of sounds to be heard in these evocative pieces. How is such imitation achieved on the piano? It is all a result of imagination. As I often remind my students, it is not enough to simply play: you also have to make the piano resonate, bringing certain notes into relief to create underlying textures of sound. There is a whole process at work involving colour and spatialisation, which gives depth and suggests effects of perspective. Although there are few notes in Mompou’s pieces, whose musical language is sparse and understated, you still have to know how to arrange the notes within the musical space. You must identify, within the chords, those ‘alien’ notes that create dissonances designed to reproduce resonant effects. This is how you can succeed in making the complex vibrations of a bell audible. For the bell emits a fundamental note accompanied by harmonics, namely sound waves of different pitches that are barely perceptible to the ear.

WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 29 Séverac’s music, more richly coloured, at times even virtuosic, calls for a different interpretative approach, akin to that of the organ, an instrument that the composer himself played. In his piano writing, we sense an almost instinctive need for a pedalboard. It is up to us to translate these effects onto the keyboard, bearing in mind that some of the expression markings indicated in the score are not always simple to interpret. Finally, Albéniz challenges the performer to surpass him/herself on a technical level. The manner in which he structures his chords, distributes notes between the fingers, and calls for hand crossings is challenging for the performer, yet it brings immense tactile pleasure. I also wanted to include in this programme an early work, less overtly demonstrative, which moves me deeply. It evokes autumn and resonates with the melancholy found in the cycles by Mompou and Séverac.

30 CATALUÑA LLIVIA... DISTANT PRESENCE Could it be said that all three of them, each in their own way, have redefined piano composition? This is particularly true of Albéniz, who was himself a pianist and revolutionised the way music was written for his instrument just as much as Liszt did. Olivier Messiaen was, in fact, deeply influenced by the richness of his playing and the way he made chords resonate, although this is less noticeable in Navarra than in Iberia, for example, where the pianistic challenges are even more impressive! Séverac and Mompou are, admittedly, less ambitious in technical terms, yet both display a certain eccentricity that makes them distinctive and endearing. Like Satie, they maintained a genuine detachment from convention, and their reputations have, in consequence, diminished as a result. For this reason, their music, fascinating though it is, remains, even today, relatively little known.

WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 31 Your programme highlights these composers’ genuine regional roots and also reminds us of the importance of the ties that have existed between French and Spanish artists. There were indeed genuine exchanges, at the beginning of the twentieth century, between musicians on both sides of the Pyrenees. Albéniz taught at the Schola Cantorum and counted Séverac among his pupils, while Mompou came to study in Paris and was profoundly influenced by Debussy. These affinities are evident in his Scènes d’enfants, as well as in another cycle composed shortly afterwards, Charmes, which responds to the Épigraphes antiques by the French master. This journey was therefore, for me, an opportunity to celebrate these dialogues and to pay tribute to figures who, though often overlooked, are nonetheless essential to the piano repertoire; composers who, in their search for authenticity, sought above all to give meaning to their music, and thereby to their lives.

DISTANT PRESENCE Wilhem Latchoumia - a pathfinding pianist He is drawn both to music rooted in the soil as well as the music of his own time. He has fashioned a distinctive repertoire, nurtured as much by his travels as by his encounters with some of today’s leading artists and creators. His success at the Orléans International Piano Competition in 2006 propelled him into the spotlight, although he was already in his thirties. Two years earlier, he had attracted attention by winning the Montsalvatge Competition in Girona, likewise devoted to contemporary music. From the moment he entered the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Lyon, in Éric Heidsieck's class, he showed a keen interest in the composers of his own time, notably joining the 20th-century workshop directed by Fabrice Pierre. He also studied there with Géry Moutier. Having followed an unconventional path that began in a Maison des Jeunes et de la Culture (MJC), hesitating some time before committing to a professional career; waiting until the age of twenty to enter the conservatoire. It was therefore natural for him to pursue his own path and move beyond well-trodden ground. Along the way, he would come into contact with Pierre Boulez, Péter Eötvös, Pierre Jodlowski, Jonathan Harvey, and György Kurtág, collaborating with them and performing their works worldwide. Alongside creation, folklore is one of his principal sources of inspiration. From the outset, he was fascinated by the example of Bartók, which led him to explore a repertoire directly inspired by rural traditions as well as medieval legends.

WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 55 Thus, for his first album on the La Dolce Volta label, he recorded transcriptions of arias from operas by Richard Wagner and ventured into the worlds of Manuel de Falla, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Alberto Ginastera, whose piano works are steeped in traditional songs and dances. His Martinican roots have also fostered in him a deep affinity for the music of sunnier climes. This taste for travel and creation is one that Wilhem Latchoumia shares with other artists who, like him, are driven to explore new territories. He performs regularly with the musicians of the Ensemble Accroche Note and he plays in duo with the pianist Vanessa Wagner. Alongside Vanessa, he discovered American minimalist music and has further developed his gifts as a colourist by revisiting the French symphonic repertoire through arrangements for two pianos. His thirst for discovery and his desire to deepen his relationship with the stage have also projected him towards the world of dance. He began a collaboration with the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker centred on the work of György Ligeti, and took part in an original creation by the duo Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. He has continued to broaden his artistic horizons in the theatre through a cross-disciplinary project by the writer and performer Penda Diouf devoted to Julius Eastman, one of the leading figures of the American musical avant-garde. While pursuing a distinguished international career, Wilhem Latchoumia has also made pedagogy a priority. A professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and at the Haute école des arts du Rhin in Strasbourg, he now guides a new generation of pianists, nurturing in them the same spirit of curiosity that has shaped his own path.
