WILHEM LATCHOUMIA 55 Thus, for his first album on the La Dolce Volta label, he recorded transcriptions of arias from operas by Richard Wagner and ventured into the worlds of Manuel de Falla, Heitor Villa-Lobos, and Alberto Ginastera, whose piano works are steeped in traditional songs and dances. His Martinican roots have also fostered in him a deep affinity for the music of sunnier climes. This taste for travel and creation is one that Wilhem Latchoumia shares with other artists who, like him, are driven to explore new territories. He performs regularly with the musicians of the Ensemble Accroche Note and he plays in duo with the pianist Vanessa Wagner. Alongside Vanessa, he discovered American minimalist music and has further developed his gifts as a colourist by revisiting the French symphonic repertoire through arrangements for two pianos. His thirst for discovery and his desire to deepen his relationship with the stage have also projected him towards the world of dance. He began a collaboration with the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker centred on the work of György Ligeti, and took part in an original creation by the duo Emio Greco and Pieter C. Scholten. He has continued to broaden his artistic horizons in the theatre through a cross-disciplinary project by the writer and performer Penda Diouf devoted to Julius Eastman, one of the leading figures of the American musical avant-garde. While pursuing a distinguished international career, Wilhem Latchoumia has also made pedagogy a priority. A professor at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and at the Haute école des arts du Rhin in Strasbourg, he now guides a new generation of pianists, nurturing in them the same spirit of curiosity that has shaped his own path.
