How do you give new impetus to your artistic life after completing a project as intense as recording Johannes Brahms' complete piano works? Geoffroy Couteau’s answer was to climb an Everest. For to perform Bach's Die GoldbergVariationen (Goldberg Variations) is to undergo an exceptional musical and human experience. It is also to grasp the expressive power of polyphony and its extraordinary force of attraction.
GEOFFROY COUTEAU 19 Does the decision to turn to Bach for your first solo album since completing your Brahms cycle reflect a form of continuity? Geoffroy Couteau : Indeed it does, in so far as Bach has illuminated my understanding of Brahms’ work. Immersing myself in his music enabled me to grasp the roots of the German Romantic repertoire, of which he was one of the great inspirers. I also recorded the transcription of Bach's Chaconne in D minor, Bearbeitet Für die linke Hand allein: 'arranged for the left hand alone, by Brahms, released on the same album as Brahms' First Piano Concerto, Op. 15 in D minor, with the Orchestre national de Metz Grand Est. It was no doubt a way of projecting myself forward, without yet knowing what my next project would be, since I was not at that point performing the Goldberg Variations. How would you describe Bach’s influence on your own artistic journey? It has been essential, as it has been for many musicians. Bach is a pivotal figure in my life. I have listened to his music extensively, to the point of maintaining an almost obsessive relationship with the composer. His Englische Suiten, on the recording by Murray Perahia, held me spellbound for many years and, in a sense, proved decisive in my decision to enter the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris.
And why did you choose the Goldberg Variations? La Dolce Volta had suggested that I take Bach into consideration. An invitation to perform these variations in the 2024 Radio France Montpellier Occitanie Festival finally persuaded me to embark upon the adventure, after much hesitation, such is the intimidating stature of this monument of the keyboard repertoire. And yet so many pianists dream of taking the plunge! Ultimately, this new recording project was perfectly in sync with my aspirations at the time. After exploring the Brahmsian world in all its profundity, I felt the need to undergo a new experience in the recording studio that would allow me to attain a more complete vision of Bach’s work. For recording offers the possibility of turning a score every which way, of pushing experimentation and reflection to a very high degree. It is an approach quite different from that of the concert platform. 20 BACH | GOLDBERG VARIATIONS BWV 988
GEOFFROY COUTEAU 21 In what frame of mind were you when you arrived at the studio, and how did you prepare for this new experience? Having performed the piece in concert had helped me refine my artistic vision and define the scope of my exploration. The next step was to bring together the conditions conducive to a successful recording: the venue, the instrument and the team. I was fortunate enough to be able to record at Le Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers, which has one of the finest acoustics for the piano. I also chose a magnificent Yamaha piano, prepared by François-Xavier Soulard, an extraordinary technician with whom I have worked for some twenty years. Recording a disc also means relying on close collaboration with the artistic director and the sound engineer. It is comparable to a nuance or a colour that runs throughout the entire album, so mutual trust is essential. Frédéric Briant and Dominique Daigremont had already worked with me on the Brahms concertos; together we sought to create the best possible sonic environment. Living a collective adventure is a powerful aid in creating the ideal conditions in which to bring one’s musical ideas to fruition.
22 BACH | GOLDBERG VARIATIONS BWV 988 Is the final recorded performance you arrived at through this work very different from the ones you achieved in concert? Certainly, especially as there is always more to discover in this score. It is a work that one can ponder throughout one’s life, without ever finding definitive answers. How did the work unveil itself to you during that recording? I began with certain intuitions concerning phrasing, the choice of tempi, and the use of the pedal, all of which were enhanced during the studio sessions. I took into account my breathing, allowed myself to be guided by the spirit of the dance, which is essential in this work, and focused my listening on the different voices to find the polyphonic balance that ensures clarity of musical discourse. All this in pursuit of an interpretation that is objectively sincere.
GEOFFROY COUTEAU 23 What about its architecture? It is a lengthy structure that forms a loop, and it needs to be seen as a whole… The first decision concerned whether or not to observe the repeats, which has a considerable impact on the overall length of the cycle. For this recording, I chose to include them, since they form part of the proportions such as Bach had conceived them, whereas in concert this does not seem to me to be an absolute necessity. It then seemed important to map out my path by establishing certain landmarks: the French overture, for instance, which appears as one of the points of transition; the twenty-fifth variation, which forms the emotional core of the work, the most expansive of those three small minor-key gems of such expressive power. Some pieces need to be linked together, while others can stand apart. And then there is the reprise of the Aria at the end, which must be nourished by everything that has gone before. This is why it was essential to run through the work in its entirety, in order to assess the weight of each variation in relation to what follows. One then realises just how concrete Bach’s thinking is, and that it must never be disregarded.
24 BACH | GOLDBERG VARIATIONS BWV 988 Is it difficult to strike the right emotional balance in this music? It is one of the most daunting aspects ! The pulsation helps to structure the eloquence, while the polyphonic progression sheds light on the relative importance of the different voices. I have sometimes had the feeling that the music spoke of its own accord, regardless of my will, and that all I had to do was let the instrument guide me. It was an extraordinarily powerful yet fleeting feeling. One can then arrive, without quite being able to explain it, at a sense of inevitability, even if doubt never entirely disappears. This work is so singular and visionary because of its harmonic complexity. Here, Bach is not responding to a commission, but seems to be addressing himself, offering himself a field of exploration of astonishing breadth, whether in harmonic, contrapuntal or technical terms. He thus leaves us a certain freedom in choosing our points of entry. This may well be one of the reasons why there are so many versions of this cycle, so different from one another and yet all so compelling.
GEOFFROY COUTEAU 25 Did you feel the need to listen to harpsichordists? Absolutely! I love the harpsichord, but it’s such a different instrument from the piano. So I wouldn’t talk about a direct influence, but rather a kind of ultimate accomplishment. I also really enjoy listening to the string trio version or transcriptions for Baroque ensembles. Even with two guitars, it works beautifully! Do you approach this cycle as you would a spiritual work? One cannot ignore this aspect of Bach’s work. Some pieces even seem to allude to the Passions. They resemble lamentations. I feel a powerful need to listen to Bach’s great sacred works to inform my interpretation of his music. How can one not think of Jesus on the cross and Mary’s weeping when playing the twenty-fifth variation!
26 BACH | GOLDBERG VARIATIONS BWV 988 What did the exploration of these Goldberg Variations reveal to you? Engaging with this score has shed light for me on the power of polyphony and its fundamental role in Western music. Analysing the often very complex way in which the different voices evolve independently and then come together to create harmony… this has helped me to understand what underpins musical language. Bach here pushes exacting standards to such a degree that the slightest microdetail becomes essential to expression. Not a single note, not a single rest is superfluous. Added to this are genuine technical challenges, with certain passages being virtually unplayable on a single keyboard, as if they were purely conceptual and did not necessarily call for practical realisation. It is then up to the performer to make choices, to accept relinquishing one thing in order to realise another, to come to terms with oneself. It becomes at once an act of surrender and a form of liberation, ultimately, an excellent lesson in life.
GEOFFROY COUTEAU 27 You’ve performed this cycle in different venues and countries. What have you learnt about its appeal, or even its universal dimension? I have had the opportunity to perform these variations in front of very diverse audiences, and this has convinced me that they are capable of moving everybody, no matter what our cultural background or life experience is. I have a particularly vivid memory of a concert given for people in vulnerable situations and facing severe social hardship. I had been advised against programming this work, on the grounds that it would be too difficult to comprehend. But I wanted to give it a go, making sure to introduce it with a few words. And I was struck by how intently they listened. Performing this cycle is always a deeply powerful experience. When one reaches the concluding Aria, having passed through all the stages of this long journey, one has the feeling of having shared a human adventure with the audience, in a true spirit of communion. It is, moreover, a singular and deeply moving feeling.

48 BACH | GOLDBERG VARIATIONS BWV 988 Geoffroy Couteau, close to Brahms and beyond… At the heart of his life as an artist stands Johannes Brahms (1833–1897), to whom he has devoted his most ambitious recording project, which has received widespread acclaim from the international press. It is a deep, almost love-like passion that began in childhood, around the age of thirteen, when he discovered the Klavierstücke, Op. 118. 'It’s thanks to Brahms that I can feel like a musician,' says Geoffroy Couteau, though he is unable to explain the reasons behind such a fascination. His relationship with the German composer is not, however, exclusive. His repertoire extends as far as contemporary creation, and Johann Sebastian Bach forms its other central pillar, even if his music long inspired in him a certain awe. He no doubt feels, in his very body, those dance movements that flow through Bach’s compositions. For the pianist has always maintained a physical relationship with music, inherited from his years of high-level training in gymnastics. 'Sport helped me through certain stages, teaching me to listen to my bodily sensations,' he explains. The piano entered his life almost by chance, before becoming, in adolescence, a self-evident calling. He trained at the Conservatoire national supérieur de musique de Paris (CNSMDP) with Michel Béroff and Denis Pascal, while also benefiting from masterclasses with distinguished teachers. Another encounter marked a decisive stage in his development: that with Nicholas Angelich, with whom he refined his artistry. “Even today, there is hardly a day when I do not think of him,” he confides.
GEOFFROY COUTEAU 49 His apprenticeship also took place in concert halls, where he would eagerly attend performances by the greatest performers, such as Nelson Freire, whose recital remains etched in his memory: 'That evening, I realised just how much the piano can open the way to what is most beautiful.' The same shiver runs through him when he listens to Bach’s Passions, which he admits he needs just as deeply to nourish his inspiration. While he shows a particular affinity for the Romantic repertoire, Geoffroy Couteau is also an ardent admirer of Maurice Ravel and Johann Jakob Froberger, as well as a devoted interpreter of the composer Rodolphe Bruneau-Boulmier (1867–1949), whose complete piano works he has recorded. Le Quatuor Hermès, the clarinettist Nicolas Baldeyrou, the violinist Amaury Coeytaux and the cellist Raphaël Perraud are among his regular partners. 'Playing alongside them, I’ve learnt so much about sound, expression, rubato and everything you can bring to a piece – 'without even being able to put it into words!', says this chamber music enthusiast, who is also a member of the Trio Arcadis. His career has taken him to the world’s leading international stages and alongside some of the most distinguished orchestras. This has not prevented him, however, from devoting himself to teaching at the École Normale de Musique de Paris – Alfred Cortot. A passionate advocate of the string quartet, the pianist also has a role as Artistic Director of the Festival de Quatuors du Luberon. His thirst for discovery and artistic experimentation has led him to collaborate with actors and to bring music into dialogue with the visual arts. He now dreams of forging a link with the world of perfume by means of an olfactory concert. For with him, it is all about feeling rather than narrative. Nothing moves him more than ‘when musical emotions take root in the inexplicable’.
