GEOFFROY COUTEAU 27 You’ve performed this cycle in different venues and countries. What have you learnt about its appeal, or even its universal dimension? I have had the opportunity to perform these variations in front of very diverse audiences, and this has convinced me that they are capable of moving everybody, no matter what our cultural background or life experience is. I have a particularly vivid memory of a concert given for people in vulnerable situations and facing severe social hardship. I had been advised against programming this work, on the grounds that it would be too difficult to comprehend. But I wanted to give it a go, making sure to introduce it with a few words. And I was struck by how intently they listened. Performing this cycle is always a deeply powerful experience. When one reaches the concluding Aria, having passed through all the stages of this long journey, one has the feeling of having shared a human adventure with the audience, in a true spirit of communion. It is, moreover, a singular and deeply moving feeling.
