Is the modern piano you play the best instrument to reproduce
these three sound worlds?
There’s a link that is created between one’s personality and one’s instrument, a link
I finally found with the modern Steinway piano that I love and that I play at the
moment. It’s a piano from Hamburg, with a beautiful sound that everyone admires
inmy school here in Bloomington, at Indiana University.
So we have come back full circle, to the tradition that you pass on to
your students.
Exactly, and that’s why I remain very optimistic. The future of music is in good
hands. I know my students won’t forget how much the world owes to to these
three composers whoseœuvre is imperishable. Even though all young artists expect
recognition and success, which is quite normal, it’s evenmore important for themto
realise their responsibility to these composers, who created unprecedented riches.
Their output testifies to the existence of our civilisation, andwithout themtheworld
would be amuch poorer place.
