16 SCHUMANN_FANTAISIE / KREISLERIANA

The

Fantasie

in Cmajor was still in theworks when Schumann, during themonth of

April 1838, began writing the

Kreisleriana

.

In contrast to Opus 17, the fruit of a long period of work (completed in December

1838), Opus 16 seemed to virtually spring from Schumann. In only a few days,

the musician laid down a score on ruled paper that would be one of the most

fascinating in Romantic piano literature.

“I completed an entire

notebook of new pieces. I

shall call them

Kreisleriana

.

You and one of your ideas

play the main role in it (…) ”.
