Do you have models of Schumann interpretation?
When I was younger I was impressed by a performance of
Kreisleriana
by Vlado
Perlemuter, and in the case of the
Fantasie
by the performance given by Sviatoslav
Richter at the time of his first Paris concerts, though without wanting to play the
work myself then. I have owned since my student days a number of records that
have made an impression on me and which I referred to, including those of Gilels,
Nat, Pollini and Argerich for the
Fantasie
. But the moment I decided to immerse
myself in the
Fantasie
in order to play it myself, I had to distance myself from those
models, and I totally liberatedmyself fromthem.Admittedly, I did sometimes listen
to such and such a passage again to check tiny details or the nature of a tempo, but
that didn’t influence my own conception and my inner journey with the work.
