23 ROMAIN LELEU & THOMAS LELEU And that too is a tribute to Piazzolla . . . Thomas Leleu: When Romain and I received the score, we observed that it was not only very difficult, but also, and above all, perfectly written for our two instruments. Romain Leleu: I’d even go so far as to say that it was written for our duo. Thierry Escaich, with whom I often play, knows our respective sounds, and he set about composing a score tailored to us, just as a scriptwriter does for a film. From the start, he was enthused by the original idea of our duo and the creative prospects it could open up. He found it all the more interesting because he can handle a wide range of musical languages and is equally at ease with the most complex of styles and the popular dimension of music, which he’s also fond of. I’m deeply grateful to him for writing this piece for our duo! Thomas Leleu: From his point of view, the idea wasn’t to push back the technical limits of our instruments, but to make them sound natural and sincere. This is a piece where the audience hears a succession of atmospheres, differently coloured as if to create a plot, a feeling of suspense.
