22 VIRTUOSI Improvisation is an inherent element of your duo. Thomas Leleu: It’s important to us to link and punctuate the arrangements with extemporised pieces created in the moment. The Improvisation no.3, which acts as a prelude to the Tango-Étude, is a genuine improvisation, which I did in several successive takes. And the first one was the best, as is only logical. Why do you do say that? Thomas Leleu: If you improvise on a theme several times in a row, because you tell yourself that such and such a detail isn’t perfect, you become aware that you lose the freshness and imagination of the first version. The connection between jazz and Piazzolla, himself a fabulous improviser, is self-evident. I often play his Tango-Étude no.3 in concert. The piece comes as a surprise to audiences, who don’t expect tuba technique to be so virtuosic. And, naturally, I play the original score, which brings us to the work by Thierry Escaich.
