JEAN-PHILIPPE COLLARD
Until recently, I didn’t dare to tackle
the cycle. I was too intimidated by so
accomplishedawork,whichreads likethe
personal diary of the composer. It exudes
a certain lack of discretion that runs
contrary tomy nature. All his feelings are
reflected there, both the sorrows and the
little pleasures of life. The Preludes allow
me to give vent to a passion, a desire, a
fit of melancholy . . . In that respect, the
piano is a great help on days when you’re
feeling low. In the interpretation of this
cycle, one of the major challenges is how
to build that landscape of the soul.
