Description
Inspired by Cervantes’ story, Richard Strauss chose to adapt the adventures of the Spanish hero
into a symphonic poem. He represents the main characters through solo instruments of the orchestra,
assigning each a musical theme, and vividly and romantically depicts the most emblematic episodes
of the novel in music.
In this symphonic poem conceived as a double concerto, Jean-Guihen Queyras and Tabea Zimmermann,
a spirited and picaresque duo, embody the Knight of the Sorrowful Countenance and his squire
Sancho Panza, alongside the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne.
