13 VANESSA WAGNER & WILHEM LATCHOUMIA What can you tell us about the palette of colours required by the early twentiethcentury French repertory that you celebrate on this album? How could one define it? Wilhem Latchoumia: The word finesse comes to mind. A finesse inherited from Fauré. Vanessa Wagner: I’d also say fluidity and a shimmering sound. That leads us to try to achieve string or wind sonorities, sometimes extremely soft dynamics, playing styles that are at once intimate and voluble, getting as far away as we can from the percussive aspect of the instrument. Wilhem Latchoumia: It was Debussy who encouraged pianists to look for a mellow sound that would make you forget the instrument has hammers. I think that sums up the way we should approach French music.
