12 PIANO TWINS Is the urge to develop the orchestral dimension of the keyboard an additional motivation for your duo? Wilhem Latchoumia: Working with orchestral timbres has always been a central concern for us, even as solo pianists. When I look at the score of a Beethoven sonata, I immediately see a string quartet or a wind section. How do you make such a seemingly monotonous instrument sound differently, give it a broad palette of colours? That’s the fundamental question that stimulates us both, whether we’re playing duets or solo. Vanessa Wagner: It’s all the more fascinating because our respective touches, while not necessarily similar, go together very well. The great flexibility of Wilhem’s technique corresponds perfectly to my style of piano playing. So much so that people tell us it’s often difficult to distinguish our individual sounds in concert. We’re thrilled if that’s the case, because it matches our conception of performing on two pianos.
