The works of George Enescu, a Romanian composer nurtured on the musical traditions of his country, also has deep roots in the French musical world of the early twentieth century. This disc explores that twofold ancestry, which made Enescu, an outstandingly charismatic personality, a veritable bridge between Romania and France. Interpretations and explorations with David Grimal . . . George Enescu is a major figure of twentieth-century music who is perhaps still little-known to the general public. When and how did you discover his oeuvre? More than thirty years ago, I was overwhelmed when I heard his Sonata no.3 ‘ dans le caractère populaire roumain ’ (in Romanian folk style), which he himself recorded with Dinu Lipatti. ‘His personality fascinated me, both the man and the musician.
