Interview with Joseph, Justine and Victor Metral What does being brother and sister bring to your work? Justine — ‘Permanent’ trios spend their lives getting to know each other. But we knew each other even before we started making music together. Having grown up with parents who weren’t professional musicians, we were never immersed in a world where music was the only option. We embarked on our adventure without really knowing what was in store for us, and our parents didn’t know either. The basis of our relationship is above all mutual assistance and support, and questioning: how would we manage to earn a living in Paris from our music? And whatever happens, I never feel better than when I’m playing with my brothers. That’s probably also because we have an ultra-democratic way of working: musical ideas are shared, debated, never imposed, not to mention the total freedom we sometimes grant ourselves in solo passages. 16 SHOSTAKOVICH • WEINBERG
