Anne Gastinel: We joke a lot among ourselves about this, because it’s true that in most of Beethoven’s trios, the three parts are not at all well balanced. The piano parts are often not very pianistic – sometimes quite diabolical! –whereas we string players more than once get the impression that we are, as it were, the supporting cast. It’s paradoxical, because we only have to stop playing to realise just how indispensable the violin and cello actually are. All the same, at times David and I do feel slightly . . .
