16 WALTON • GRISI • PROKOFIEV An almost cinematographic project, therefore, with a quasi-Beethovenian or Straussian theme: the hero and his destiny? Yes, that’s it exactly. A hero who roams from the heart of Russian ballet music with Prokofiev, to the lyricism of interwar English music with Walton, to the music of today with Gwenaël Grisi – music that is literally scripted, because On the Reel is written directly from analyses of film scenarios. The main musical themes and the main lines of a film scenario are often developed in a similar way. It’s the principle of the leitmotif. Thanks to the music, you can sense or deduce what will happen next. Epic sweep, passions, contrasts . . . Everything you can expect from a great adventure film is found here musically. Moments of great lyricism, love and tenderness, inner struggles or doubts. While the three works on the programme have points in common, how are they linked to your own story? Today it’s very ambitious to do a project that isn’t a ‘crossover’. In the current economy of the recording business, I have the good fortune to work with a label that offers artists the most precious thing of all: freedom. The Walton Concerto, which is the starting point of the album, is a work I grew up with. In fact, it’s the first big concerto I played. We know each other by heart! (laughter)
