Brahms concludes the sonata, and with it his entire corpus of chamber music, with an Andante con moto that is a theme and variations, the genre in which he particularly excelled, here treated with uncommon ease and grace. A theme reminiscent of a folksong and a movement replete with humble, limpid, poetic music, which, after a few fierce accents, concludes its fifth and final variation in the most unbridled joy.
