Could this pianism be described as ‘revolutionary’? ‘Revolutionary’, certainly. But, paradoxically, Prokofiev uses classical forms. So much so that some passages from Cinderella sound like Poulenc! The pre-war influences and the years he spent in France had left their mark on him when he was back in the USSR composing this ballet that was supposed to be simple to listen to, accessible to audiences. However, it must be acknowledged that the writing is complex.
