What is your relationship to minimalist music? Minimalist music is taking up an increasingly important place in my repertory. I must admit that I didn’t encounter it much at the beginning of my career, since classical musicians rarely took this type of music seriously then. Because it’s technically straightforwardand canbeplayedbymusicianswithout classical training, minimalist music was cordoned off from so-called ‘art’ music. That kind of compartmentalisation seems absurd to me, because you can already find the first stirrings of minimalist music inLiszt, Scriabinand Janáček.There is no radical separation between genres. Fortunately, though, attitudes are gradually changing. Even if there is still today a certain disdain on the part of the classical world for this style, the borders are becoming much more porous and there’s more dialogue between artists. Minimalist music is gaining visibility, especially among young audiences. Arvo Pärt and Philip Glass are a splendid example of this and are genuinely venerated by a section of music lovers!
