I haven’t listened to Rachmaninoff’s recordings much and I immediately ruled out taking them as a benchmark. That also applies to recordings by other performers, of course! It’s certainly not for lack of admiration. I simply try to approach the work without preconceived ideas. In fact, Rachmaninoff’s recordings are surprising: he plays in a rather distant, reasoned way, as if he were denying himself any hint of sentimentality and had invested all his emotion in the composition.
