How did you find working with Christian Arming? He’s known, among other things, for his ability to attune himself to his soloists. It was sheer joy. I too always listen to what conductors have to say, but I also know how to impose my decisions if necessary. When I feel that there is the possibility of exchanging with a conductor, but alsowith the orchestra, then I can be very flexible in this dialogue: each of us brings something to the other. As the recording sessions went on, we came to trust each other, especially as we really listened to one another, the questions asked were the right ones, and at the end of the sessions I was moved. We did a complete take of the Bloch and the orchestra’s reaction was touching; it’s a rare thing, but I felt a genuine communion in the work we did that was expressed in mutual gratitude. Everything went off without any tension, without any lethargy. I think you’ll hear that in the recording.
