55 RAPHAËL JOUAN ∙ ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE METZ GRAND EST ∙ DAVID REILAND Born in Belgium, David Reiland graduated in saxophone and orchestral conducting in Brussels, Paris, and from the Salzburg Mozarteum. After starting out as assistant to Simon Rattle at the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Reiland quickly became principal guest conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra, chief conductor of the Luxembourg Chamber Orchestra and the Lausanne Sinfonietta, and is musical director of the Orchestre National de Metz since 2018. At his instigation, the orchestra expanded its range and repertoire, as evidenced by the performance of Strauss' Elektra in the autumn of 2025. In August 2020, the Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra awarded him the title of ‘Schumann Guest’. Schumann, as well as Mozart and French Romanticism occupy an important place in Reiland's work. David Reiland was also Music Director of the Korean National Symphony Orchestra from 2022 to 2025 and is a regular guest conductor with all the major Belgian orchestras and opera houses, for example in Antwerp, where he conducted Bizet's Les Pêcheurs des Perles, a production that was later revived by the Grand Théâtre de Genève. At the Leipzig Opera, he conducted Gounod's rarely performed opera Cinq-Mars une conjuration ssous Louis XIII.
