19 RAPHAËL JOUAN ∙ ORCHESTRE NATIONAL DE METZ GRAND EST ∙ DAVID REILAND What characterises the two short pieces that complete this programme? These are works that I am especially fond of. Waldesruhe (Silent Woods), Op. 68/5 (B.182), which evokes the calm of the forest, is rather contemplative and highlights the instrument’s vocal quality. The Rondo in G minor, Op. 94 (B.171), on the other hand, is highly virtuosic and also daunting to perform. It is a contrasting score that could almost be regarded as a miniature concerto, but with lighter instrumentation. Here again, Dvořák shows a remarkable sense of orchestration, displaying great refinement in his writing, particularly in the timpani part, which I find sublime.
