19 ROMAIN LELEU & THOMAS LELEU Arrangements, transcriptions, improvisations and new works: you’re in the process of creating a new repertoire for your duo. What are the challenges involved? Romain Leleu: We play melody instruments, non-polyphonic by nature, and that’s the first challenge. The second is not just to make transcriptions and adjust the keys, but to bring a different conception to each piece. Finally, this programme is virtuosic not just in purely technical terms, but because it represents a physical challenge. In my opinion, it’s harder to play these pieces in concert than to be the soloist in a virtuoso concerto from the repertoire, because as a duo we don’t have a single moment’s respite and have to be on the alert throughout. There are also issues of accuracy, intonation and sonic balance between the two instruments.
