24 ECHOES OF VIENNA And in this quartet, we can hear references to both Richard and Johann Strauss! Indeed, even though these two composers are really different. This work ultimately blends several aesthetics. It stands in the lineage of Classicism, is shot through with Romantic outbursts, draws on Viennese folk imagery, and even flirts with Impressionism. Its four movements are highly contrasted, both in texture and in playing style. Korngold moves from homorhythmic writing, giving the impression of a single instrument, to a contrapuntal style, exploits the widest range of dynamics, and juggles with pizzicatos, harmonics, and double stopping, to the point of making the quartet sound like an orchestra. All of which makes the piece extraordinarily demanding to perform!
