QUATUOR HERMÈS 17 What was the starting point for this album, which sets side by side one of the quartets that Mozart composed in 1783 in Vienna and dedicated to Joseph Haydn with twentieth-century works by Anton Webern and Erich Korngold? The great Viennese classics form the foundation of the string quartet repertoire, to which it seems essential to us to return regularly. After hesitating between Haydn and Beethoven, our choice for this new recording ultimately fell upon Mozart. We had spent a great deal of time with this composer, most recently alongside the pianist Kit Armstrong, and Mozart's Quartet in D minor has its place among our preferred works. It thus became the cornerstone of this programme, which we decided to devote to Vienna while emphasising diversity. Whereas our previous albums focused on a single composer or a unified stylistic world, the idea here was to draw closer to the spirit of our concerts, in which we enjoy creating dialogues between works from different eras. Since Webern and Korngold likewise embodied the Viennese soul and displayed affinities with Mozart’s legacy, it seemed only natural to include both of them in this project.
