18 GYPSY MELODIES He also toured abroad, collecting and arranging traditional Romanian melodies and composing numerous works for violin and piano. Most of them are very popular and have become encore pieces, including the spectacular and virtuoso Hora mărțișorului. Its name refers to the principle Romanian festival: men give women and girls the mărțișor, a red and white thread that they pin to their clothes to mark the arrival of spring. Thanks to Dinicu, this thread is the subject of a phenomenal setting to music. One of the undisputed hits with worldwide appeal is the song now most often referred to by its French title, Les Deux Guitares. The Russian gypsy musician Ivan Vassiliev (1810-1870) is considered to have written the music. However, it is more a compilation of motifs from old Hungarian gypsy songs. Its extraordinary popularity is attested by its countless adaptations and language versions. Our album features it in an instrumental arrangement by Alexei Aslamas, inspired by the style of the excellent contemporary Hungarian violinist Roby Lakatos.
