14 POULENC ∙ STRAVINSKY ∙ PROKOFIEV How did this duo sonata project come about? David Grimal: Itamar and I are from roughly the same generation, and we’ve known each other for a long time. I was still a student at the Conservatoire, and he came to play with Vengerov who was making his debut in Paris. We must have crossed paths on certain occasions without really seeing each other; I was too shy to go up to him . . . Itamar Golan: We’re both musicians, both Jewish, but I don’t think we paid much attention to each other at that time. We met again much later, at a chamber music festival on the wonderful island of Elba. After all that time we had been through many experiences, lots of ups and downs, and it was great to make music together in a very natural way, with so many affinities between us, such sympathy and mutual respect.
