59 MICHEL BOUVARD César Franck played many instruments in his life as an organist. During the recording of this album, it occurred to me that he could have inaugurated the organ of Saint-Sernin in 1889! Which of his works would he have played? How would he have registered them? However that may be, these organs with their strong ‘personality’ undoubtedly offer us highly pragmatic guidance as to how to use them and even howwe should understand the works. Personally, I have noticed many times how irreducible this sonic experience is. And so, like Stradivarius or the other giants of instrument making, Aristide Cavaillé-Coll is still teaching us today how a ‘sound-producing machine’ can become a consummate work of art which, transcending its object, teaches, transforms and nourishes us.
