Although Franck played many organs, his music undeniably bears the stamp of the instrument at the church of Sainte-Clotilde in Paris. But you’ve chosen to record it on the organ of the basilica of Saint-Sernin in Toulouse. What does that imply in terms of interpretation? You can ask the question this way: is there an ‘ideal’ organ to play ‘the complete Franck’, the pieces of the 1860s as well as the Trois Chorals of 1890? I don’t know. Sainte-Clotilde was an instrument with a very specific layout when it was built (1859), and it was modified quite a bit in the twentieth century. If I decided to record at Saint-Sernin, the first reason was obviously my special osmosis with a magnificent instrument that I have frequented assiduously for more than twenty-five years, in that magical place and its exceptional acoustic. That counts a great deal when you embark on an adventure like this one! 25 MICHEL BOUVARD
