23 XAVIER PHILLIPS, CÉDRIC TIBERGHIEN Here you are performing as a duo for the first time, in an album devoted to Gabriel Fauré. How did you come to meet? Cédric Tiberghien: We met through our children, who went to the same school. We were living in the same neighbourhood, a stone’s throw from Paris, without being aware of each other. At that time, though, we had played together only rarely. Then I went to live far away from the capital, but we continued to see each other regularly. One day Fauré came up in our conversation. Since we shared the same enjoyment of his music, we said to ourselves, ‘Why not?’ Xavier Phillips: For my part, I was planning a new single-composer disc, but I hadn’t yet decided on which composer. Then we had that conversation and the idea of Fauré appealed to us. While the Élégie , the Berceuse , the Sicilienne are all are very famous, the two sonatas are much less familiar. I thought that maybe I could do my bit to make them better known. We plunged into these works together, at the deep end, as it were.
