On his return to Prague in the summer of 1895, after completing the formidable Cello Concerto (his last ‘American’ work), Dvořák composed two more string quartets, no.13 in G major (op.106, B192) and no.14 in A flat (op.105, B193), his final chamber works, which echoed his happiness at having finally regained his native land. The last nine years of his life, during which he directed the Prague Conservatory, were devoted to writing operas ( The Devil and Kate , Rusalka , Armida ) and a series of five symphonic poems, which brought his prodigious career to an end.
