QUATUOR HERMÈS 15 How and why did you choose to record the three string quartets of Robert Schumann, published as his op.41? Our primary aim was to enjoy ourselves by proposing the powerful concept of a complete recording of a composer’s quartets. The idea of working in depth on Schumann’s quartets had tempted us for a long time. After playing the Third Quartet several times in concert, we already had a certain experience of thismusic, which takes time before you’re comfortable with it and demands a long process of maturation before it can be seen as a whole. But we feel this op.41 set very much reflects who we are musically, in its fantasy, its sensuality, its impetuosity, not to mention the evolution that is perceptible from one quartet to the next.
